New Release: Michael E. Porter ‘On Competition’

New Release: Michael E. Porter On CompetitionA potential must-read for business professionals and entrepreneurs, On Competition gives us an insight on how competition works and ways to analyze it.

About the book: Presented as a collective whole, here are a dozen articles that address the important issues of modern competition, from its relationship with environmental regulation to the counterintuitive role of geography in the global economy.

For the past two decades, Michael Porter’s work has towered over the field of competitive strategy. On Competition, Updated Edition brings together more than a dozen of Porter’s landmark articles from the Harvard Business Review. Five are new to this edition, including the 2008 update to his classic “The Five Competitive Forces That Shape Strategy,” as well as new work on health care, philanthropy, corporate social responsibility, and CEO leadership.

This collection captures Porter’s unique ability to bridge theory and practice. Each of the articles has not only shaped thinking, but also redefined the work of practitioners in its respective field. In an insightful new introduction, Porter relates each article to the whole of his thinking about competition and value creation, and traces how that thinking has deepened over time.

Combating Homelessness: Ten Toes Down

By: Shelven Lewis

Noah Rattler knew he wanted to change the world when he was a student at Houston’s Ross S. Sterling High School. As a child his parents taught him to always think for himself and follow his dreams. They also instilled in him the importance of serving others, and exemplified this lesson by often opening up their home to family and friends needing shelter.

Option 2 779x1024 Combating Homelessness: Ten Toes Down

After graduating from Prairie View A&M University, with degrees in both Mechanical Engineering and Physics, he was at a crossroads. He could  pursue a corporate career in the sciences, or follow his desire to heed his parent’s teachings and serve the community. As it turns out, mama and papa know best, as Rattler followed their influence and literally stepped out and began working with the homeless.

After accepting an internship in New Jersey that required him to walk up to 24 miles a day, he returned home to Houston where volunteered with SEARCH, a homeless organization, for more than 3 years. Back at home, Noah came up with a unique idea.  He would walk from Houston, Texas to Santa Monica, California and not only raise money for SEARCH, but also raise awareness about the issue of homelessness nationwide.

He started planning for this great task in 2006, and in 2007 he literally put one foot in front of the other and began his journey.  Through many blisters, a battle with planter fasciitis (inflammation of the heel), heel spurs and an array of other body pains he walked the 1,800 miles from Houston, Texas to Santa Monica, California. In each city he trekked through, he stopped at homeless shelters to fellowship and spread the word of the intent for his journey. This one man walk-a-thon took 134 days to complete and over a year to recover from.

According to estimates of the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, on any given night in America, an estimated 700,000 to 2 million people are homeless. There are hundreds of service organizations across the country whose mission is to provide aid to the homeless; all of which have the same goals and intentions as Mr. Noah Rattler. Through this one man’s actions, he has shown us that we can all make a difference, one step at a time.
